Acton, Jean D. (Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C.), and Quentin N. Myrvik. Production of interferon by alveolar macrophages. J. Bacteriol. 91:2300-2304. 1966.-Rabbit alveolar macrophages inoculated with parainfluenza-3 virus in vitro produce a viral inhibitor which possesses the properties of interferon. The interferon is nondialyzable, is stable at pH 4, is not sedimented at 100,000 x g, exhibits species specificity, and can passively protect other alveolar macrophages from infection with virulent rabbitpox virus. The possible significance of alveolar macrophage-produced interferon is discussed.

THE ROLE OF ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES IN THE PRODUCTION OF COLONY –STIMULATING FACTOR BY THE LUNG
The role of alveolar macrophages in the production of granulocyte/ macrophage colony-stimulating factor(s) by the rat lung was investigated. Lavaged lungs, when incubated at proper weight per volume of culture medium, produced the same amount of colony-stimulating factor as unlavaged ones. Both lavaged and unlavaged lungs produced similar types of colony-stimulating factor (s). Prolonged i...
متن کاملInduction of gamma interferon production in human alveolar macrophages by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) is a cytokine which plays a critical role in resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. While T lymphocytes and natural killer cells are a major source of IFN-gamma, previous demonstrations that it can be produced by murine macrophages prompted us to examine the capacity of human alveolar macrophages to express IFN-gamma. Here we report that in vitro infect...
متن کاملProduction of plasminogen activator by alveolar macrophages in normal subjects and patients with interstitial lung disease.
Increased production of the serum protease plasminogen activator is associated with tissue damage. The in vitro production of plasminogen activator by alveolar macrophages obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage was studied in 22 normal subjects and 28 patients with interstitial lung disease to determine whether plasminogen activator is produced by normal alveolar macrophages and whether this is inc...
متن کاملSynergistic Effect of LPS, IFN- and Iron on Apoptosis of Balb/c Mice Macrophages Following Nitric Oxide Production
Objective(s) Previous studies have demonstrated that the nitric oxide (NO) dependent death of murine peritoneal macrophages activated in vitro with IFN-g and LPS is mediated through apoptosis. In the present study, we investigated the synergistic effect of LPS, IFN-g and iron on NO production and apoptosis. Materials and Methods After determination of iron cytotoxicity, the peritoneal macrop...
متن کاملRecombinant Interferon-Gamma Primes
The capacity of interferon-gamma to regulate the generation and release of leukotriene B4 (LTB4) from human alveolar macrophages ofnormal nonsmoking individuals was evaluated. When alveolar macrophages were incubated for 60 min with heat aggregated IgG (HAIgG), they generated and released 5.7±1.7 ng ofLT B4 per 106 cells compared to 1.9±0.4 ng from cells incubated with buffer alone, P = 0.02. W...
